A compound word is like the branch of a tree, it has its basis in the Root Stem Thuo, yet it is different because it is combined with another word. "a" means without or not any. The result is the opposite of thuo.

Let's see how the different translator's handled the word a + thuo:

Col 3:21 "Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they will
             not lose heart (NASB)

Col 3:21 "Fathers, provoke not your children to anger lest they be
                discouraged (KJV & RSV)

Col 3:21 "Fathers don't overcorrect your children or they will grow up
             feeling inferior and frustrated (Phillips)

Col 3:21 "Fathers provoke not your children, that they be not
             discouraged (Panin's)

Col 3:21 "Ye Fathers be not irritating your children lest they be
             disheartened (Rotherham's)

Col 3:21 "Fathers provoke not your children to indignation lest they be
             discouraged (Rheim's)

More light is now shed on the word Thuo by its opposite, which is to lose heart or be discouraged. So the words spirited or passionate come to mind here. When people are free, they have courage to invent new things, but when powerful monarchs or kings rule over the people they lose heart and are discouraged.
